RF power detector offers enhanced performance

Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) has rolled out a radio frequency (RF) power detector for cellular handsets that promises to enable manufacturers to achieve greater performance while reducing system size.

According to the company, the low-drift AD8312 improves performance by enabling precise, temperature-stable power control with a wide dynamic range. Designed for all current and emerging cellular standards, including GSM, CDMA, W-CDMA and TD-SCDMA, the device is available in a 6-pin 1-by-1.5mm package that, stressed ADI, requires two-thirds the board space of other solutions.

Accurate power control is a critical requirement for cellular handset type approval, the company explained. The AD8312 measures signals at operating frequencies of RF power detector allows measurement at low power levels, reducing the amount of power being coupled to the detector.

Aside from cellular handsets, the AD8312 is also suitable for other wireless devices, such as RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) and TSSI (Transmitted Signal Strength Indicator) wireless terminal devices, and transmitter power measurement. The product is already available in sample quantities, with volume production scheduled in March 2005. The AD8312 consumes 4.5mA from a 2.7V to 5.5V supply, and is priced at $1.07 per unit in 1,000-piece quantities.
