TSMC moves 40V 0.18?m process to volume production

Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg Co. Ltd said Tuesday (Nov. 23) that it has a 40V, 0.18?m, manufacturing process in volume production.

TSMC claims it is the industry's first such process and that it would allow designers to produce single-chip TFT-LCD drivers for portable applications. Designers could reduce the number of chips in a system by combining LCD source driver and gate driver chips with a power management ic.

"The design community has been anxiously awaiting the delivery of a 40V, low-power 0.18?m process for volume production," said Genda Hu, VP of marketing for TSMC, in a statement. "This development enables a whole new class of display drivers." The process is based on TSMC's industry-leading 0.18?m, low power process and supports logic and analog IP and libraries that are proven in TSMC's 0.18?m low-power process. TSMC is also developing special intellectual property (IP) elements enabling one-time programmability (OTP) and multiple-time programmability (MTP). These IP modules are expected to be available in 2005 without additional process steps.

The TSMC 0.18?m 40V process is available on TSMC's Cybershuttle prototyping service. Backend services, including gold bumping, are offered through TSMC, the company said.
