Keywords:Freescale?

Three new audio-with-power-management ICs from Freescale Semiconductor provide OEM designers with very highly integrated one-chip solutions appropriately customized for the wide range of today's consumer wireless products.

The MC13790, for low-tiered, cost-effective wireless applications such as 2G/2.5G handsets and for consumers that want a basic phone that is smaller than previous generations, integrates an Rx/Tx audio system, seven low dropout (LDO) regulators with sequencing circuitry for power management functions, and a Li-ion /NiMH battery charger.

Users may implement the chip using less than 30 external components. The audio system features speaker/headset amplifiers, differential alert/speaker phone amplifier, mono playback of auxiliary stereo inputs, anti-pop protection, and TX handset/headset microphone amps. It also contains a serial peripheral interface (SPI) for linking with the system processor. Battery management features include low-battery detect circuitry, fully autonomous dead-battery precharge and charge of lithium-ion sources to 4.2V (software-supported charging of NiMH sources to 4.4V), as well as software-controlled charge for NiMH sources to 5V.

The MC13883, a modular drop-in solution for GSM handsets, PDAs, audio players, digital cameras and DVDs, contains a USB 2.0 On-the-Go transceiver, carkit interface (CEA-936), and Li-ion charger. Users transfer files, music or graphics through a mini-USB connector. They can also charge their portable product batteries through this same USB interface.

The third IC, the MC13890, is billed as a state-of-the art audio-with-power-management chip that's suited to mid- to high-tier products such as GSM/GPRS/EDGE and CDMA mobile handsets, PDAs, digital still cameras and toys. It imbeds CEA-936 car-kit functionality and features a full audio system for mono phone audio and stereo music playback (includes 13bit voice codec and 16bit stereo d/a converter), three zones of backlight drivers with "fun light" functionality, and a comprehensive power lineup that includes a multi-mode buck switcher, boost switcher for lighting and USB OTG applications, 14 linear regulators for power optimization and power-up sequencer.

Preliminary samples of all three ICs are already available. The MC13790 (76-pin, 7-by-7mm QFN) is priced at $2.85, the MC13883 (6-by-6mm 40-pin QFN) at $1.65, and the MC13890 (185-pin BGA) at $5, all in 10,000-unit quantities.
