Consumers are getting more and more tech-savvy nowadays. From laptops to camera phones, from PDAs to digital cameras, people want more function integration and better features. To get a larger share of the digital camera market, Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co. Ltd (AKM) has developed a low power consumption 16bit mono A/D and D/A audio converter that features built-in microphone and speaker amplifiers and automatic level control.

The new AK4631 audio CODEC is compatible with speaker amplifiers with working voltages up to 5V. This means that piezoelectric speakers, used in slim equipment, can be driven directly with no need for an external amplifier, the company explained.

The new device incorporates AKM's microphone auto level control circuit, a digital volume control, beep input, and speaker amplifiers compatible with both dynamic and piezoelectric speakers.

According to the company, the built-in automatic level control circuit improves speaker output power and the internal register is switchable for power saving mode. With built-in PLL, the device generates the necessary audio clock internally, enabling simple interfacing with the system LSI. The CODEC offers sampling rates from 7.35kHz to 48kHz and an operating voltage range from 2.6V to 3.6V.

The AK4631 comes in a 28-pin QFN package (5.2mm?). Samples and evaluation boards for the audio converter are already available.
