ARC International plc, a developer of configurable processor cores and application platforms, has cut a licensing deal with fabless chip company Broadcom Corp. and has had a product partnership in place for some time with TTPcom Ltd, ARC announced Monday (Nov. 29).

ARC has made a multiyear licensing agreement allowing Broadcom to use ARC's configurable microprocessors and development tools to develop SOCs, including the ARC 600 and ARC 700 processor cores, ARC said.

The value of the deal was not disclosed. When chip companies license a large swathe of an IP provider's portfolio for multiple years it is usually expected that they will receive a large discount compared with licensing the intellectual property piece-meal.

TTPCom, a developer of protocol stacks used in the design and manufacture of wireless communication terminals, has implemented ARC's configurable processor cores in TTPcom's cellular baseband engine, ARC said. The CBEmacro is a family of cellular chip designs and associated services to allow the implementation of EGPRS and 3GPP baseband chips by semiconductor companies.

It was not disclosed how ARC would be recompensed for each licensing deal of the CBEmacro.

"The ARC-Based CBEmacro product represents a significant addition to our product line," said Tony Milbourn, managing director of TTPCom, in a statement. "ARC is strategic to our future product plans and we look forward to growing our relationship in the cellular marketplace," he also said. "Industry leaders are leveraging the benefits of ARC's configurable technology to create their next generation products without the bloat that is typical of other processor architectures," said Carl Schlachte, president and chief executive officer of ARC International, in the same statement.
