A few weeks after announcing a module pact with NEC, Chipcon is sending an IC to market that combines a ZigBee RF front-end, memory and a microcontroller (MCU) in a single package.

The CC2430 SoC implements the radio architecture housed in the CC2420 device, a ZigBee-ready transceiver previously released by Chipcon. The SoC also packs in an 8051 MCU, 128KB of flash memory and 8KB of RAM.

In addition to the above capabilities, the CC2420 comes equipped with an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), several timers, an AES-128 co-processor, a watchdog timer, a sleep-mode timer with 32kHz crystal oscillator, and 21 programmable I/O pins. The chip is developed in a 0.18?m CMOS process, dissipates 27mA power during operation, and is delivered in a 7-by-7mm QLP 48 package.

CC2420 development kits and samples will be available in the second quarter of 2005. Chipcon expects pricing to be less than $4 in quantities of 1 million.
