NEC Corp. said Tuesday (Nov. 30) it would reorganize its 3G mobile terminal platform strategy by employing additional platforms from Qualcomm Inc. and Ericsson Mobile Platforms.

The Tokyo-based company said its revised platform strategy would be modeled after its 2.5G mobile terminal product development strategy driven by NEC's Chinese operation. In recent years, NEC rapidly organized its mobile terminal business structure in China by combining its resources in Japan and China and those of its partners such as Techfaith Wireless, the largest design house group in China, and STEP Technologies, a joint venture of Techfaith Wireless and NEC.

NEC expects the new business structure to speed product development and introductions. In China, NEC has launched over 20 varieties of terminals this year alone, with NEC Telecom (China) developing new products for the global market by adjusting its China-based platforms for other markets.

By utilizing Qualcomm's platform, NEC has launched a prototype of a new 3G handset weighing just 89 grams and measuring 117 x 46 x 16mm. NEC will propose this handset to carriers in China for their 3G trials.

At the same time, NEC has developed a 3G handset using Ericsson's technology that will emerge in commercial products after April 2005. NEC will propose this handset to Hutchison 3G group and other 3G operators.
