Half-bricks take the heat

Artesyn Technologies' new high-efficiency half-brick dc-dc converters, the RFB300/350 series, can deliver up to 350W continuously without derating over a baseplate temperature of -40C to 100C.

Generating a nominal 12Vdc or 28Vdc output, the converters, in a standard 2.27-by-2.39 inch footprint with choice of 0.4 inch or 0.5 inch profile, are designed primarily for high performance RF power amplifiers and equipment used in compact, high availability applications. Their wide operating temperature range makes them an ideal power source for demanding outdoor environments and for cellular base station equipment and "last mile" broadband equipment.

The RFB300/350 series comprises four models: One with a nominal 24V (18V to 36V input), and three with a nominal 48V input (36V to 75V). The 24V input model delivers 11A at 28V. The three 48V input models provide outputs of 11A at 28V, 12.5A at 28V, and 29.2A at 12V. Each model comes as standard with a trim function for the output voltage (adjustable from 16.8V to 29.4V in the 28V models and 7.2V to 13.2V in the 12V model), thus suiting these bricks to a broad array of telecom, networking and industrial applications.

All models use an advanced forward converter topology and fixed-frequency switching to provide conversion efficiencies to 91 percent at full load. They feature a line regulation of 0.15 percent, load regulation of 0.2 percent, no minimum load, remote-sense and remote on/off facilities, and negative logic remote on/off available as an option. They include comprehensive protection against over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature conditions. Calculated MTBF is more than 2.6 million hours at 55C (in accordance with Telcordia SR-332) for the 28V models.

The converters carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 VDE, UL/cUL60950, and an IECEE CB Scheme test certificate and report. The RFB300/350 series, packaged as fully encapsulated units intended for through-hole board mounting, incorporate aluminium baseplate technology for conduction cooling. Various heatsink attachment methods are available, and the modules can be supplied with threaded or blank inserts to suit customers' preferences. Sample quantities of these half-bricks are available for immediate delivery. Unit pricing ranges from $82.50 for the 308W, 24V input model to $90.75 for the 350W, 48V input model, both in quantities of 1,000. Standard lead time on all models is stock to 12 weeks.
