Test equipment maker Agilent Technologies is adding a comprehensive set of new tools for its existing E5515C (8960 series 10) wireless communications test set. The E5515C with lab applicationsa bench-top network emulation toolprovides an integrated approach with high accuracy and repeatability.

Used by development engineers and chipset manufacturers that are testing multi-format wireless devices, the new tools expedite chip, module, application, and wireless-device development processes. The tools promise to reduce cost and frustration by eliminating complex RF connections and unrepeatable calibrations.

The enhancements to the Agilent E5515C with lab applications include:

? The E6717A UMTS suite. It bundles lab applications for GPRS, EGPRS (EDGE), GSM and W-CDMA cellphone technologies into a single product costing less than individual formats.

? The E6719B suite, which includes EGPRS (EDGE) functions and GSM/GPRS, as well as cdma2000, and W-CDMA technologies. It's also a single product, also costing less than individual formats.

? The E6703C W-CDMA lab application; it includes an Agilent-exclusive phase discontinuity graphical measurement. Agilent says this will help expedite the verification of phase performance under changing power conditions to ensure wireless device reliability.

? The E6701D GSM/GPRS lab application, which supports MMS (multimedia messaging service) testing and AMR (adaptive multi-rate) capabilities. It also provides end-to-end video conferencing test with realtime audio/video and PIP (picture-in-picture).

Switches between technologies
"The Agilent E5515C with lab applications switches between combinations of wireless technologies in less than two seconds for most formatsa process that used to take tens of seconds to minutes," notes Earl Thompson, VP and GM of Agilent's Wireless Division. "The multi-format and fast-switching capabilities let you test raw data throughput, stress test multi-feature wireless devices, and simulate applications operating in real-world conditions."

The E5515C lab applications include technology-specific WPA (wireless protocol advisor) software, providing diagnostic tools that let you view protocol layer messaging between the wireless device and the network. WTM (Wireless Test Manager) software, purchased separately, lets you develop and support your own automated test processes, while expediting development of final test plans and calibration tests for wireless device production lines.

The WTM software for cdma2000/IS-95/AMPS, W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS/EGPRS runs under a Visual Basic .NET development platform.

The E5515C wireless communications test set and lab applications are available now. The E5515C 8960 wireless communications test set mainframe is priced at about $44,000 to $54,500. The E67XX Lab applications and suites costs from about $32,500 to $88,000, and the E656XX Wireless Test Managers and suites costs from about $3,000 to $8,400.
