Boe Hydis Technology Co. Ltd, a manufacturer of high-end TFT-LCD, has entered into an agreement with Hitachi Displays Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd, to grant a license under the patents regarding its own wide viewing angle technology called FFS (fringe field switching).

According to Boe Hydis, the FFS technology enables wide viewing angle of 180 (left/right/upper/lower). The technology detects no color shift from a change in the viewing angle. In addition, it can sharply reduce the power consumption of LCD without lowering the brightness by improving transmittance ratio. FFS is used in LCD TVs, as well as mobile applications such as cellular phone, PDA, tablet PC and notebook PC.

FSS' fist patent application was filed in 1996 and 152 patents have been registered all over the world since then, says Boe Hydis. The technology is still going through continuous upgrades and as a result the company introduced the AFFS (advanced FFS) in May 2003.
