Motorola Inc. is reportedly looking to set up manufacturing operations in India.

The Hindu of New Delhi quoted sources on Friday (Dec. 3) as saying top Motorola executives had met with senior government officials about setting up manufacturing operations in India.

Motorola's manufacturing plans focus on mobile phones and switches, the report said. If approved, the deal would mark the second time Motorola has established electronics manufacturing facilities in India. It began manufacturing pagers here years ago, but later sold the facility.

Earlier this week (Dec. 1), Nokia said it would set up a $150 million Indian plant to manufacture mobile phones. LG earlier said it would open another plant to manufacture similar phones in Pune.

Flextronics has also announced plans to increase electronics manufacturing here, and South Korea's Intellect Inc. is setting up India's first major fabrication facility near Hyderabad.

Samsung and Intel are also in various stages of planning for manufacturing operations here.

With few exceptions, most manufacturing plans focus on mobile phones. wireless services are expanding quickly here, led by aggressive marketing by CDMA-based wireless providers.
