Software developer Digital 5 has inked a development pact with wireless LAN (WLAN) chipset provider Atheros, under which the companies will create a reference design for wireless-enabled digital media adapter and DVD player applications.

According to the companies, the reference design will be an audio/video (A/V) solution that is capable of wirelessly delivering a wide variety of content such as music, photos and movies from a Windows PC, media gateway, or Internet connection to a TV or audio system anywhere in the home. The design combines an Atheros 802.11a/b/g chipset, a digital media processor from ALi Corp., and multimedia software from Digital 5.

Digital 5 content distribution software incorporates quality-of-service (QoS), digital rights management (DRM), and security features. The software also enables interoperability across multiple devices to allow the communication and sharing of information and media content across multiple wired or wireless home networks.

Atheros' chipset is equipped with the company's Super AG technology, which allows the chipset to deliver data rates up to 108Mbps. The chipset also supports Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), and IEEE 802.11i AES specs.
