Polymer tantalum caps withstand lead-free processes

Helping design engineers to comply with emerging international directives such as Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation, AVX Corp. has developed a new series of low equivalent series resistance (ESR) conductive polymer tantalum capacitors specifically designed to withstand the higher temperatures required for lead-free soldering processes and are capable of withstanding 260C reflow temperatures three or even four times, said the company.

The tcj capacitors are constructed using a conductive polymer cathode technology that enables users to take advantage of the volumetric efficiency of tantalum, reduced ESR in addition to withstanding lead-free soldering temperatures.

Available in A and B case sizes, members of the TCJ series are available in capacitance values from 4.7?F to 150?F in voltage ratings of 4V, 6.3V and 10V. The operating temperature range is -55C to 125C.

The new capacitors exhibit excellent ESR characteristics. For example, an A case size (1206) 10?F tantalum capacitor with a traditional manganese dioxide cathode typically has an ESR measured in ohms, while the equivalent TCJ series device has an ESR of

Typical pricing for the TCJ series capacitors ranges from 25 cents to 35 cents in quantities of 10,000. Delivery is eight to ten weeks. Samples are available immediately.
