Ahead of interoperability tests on the path to official certification, Wavesat Inc. announced in Taiwan early this week that it is shipping what it claims is the first WiMax baseband chip, the DM256. General delivery is scheduled for early January.

The company also announced a strategic partnership with EDOM Technology Co. Ltd for the distribution of chips in Taiwan. The aim of the partnership is to bring low-cost WiMax subscriber units to the market by the second quarter of 2005.

The DM256 is Montreal-based Wavesat's sixth-generation OFDM chip. It complies with the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, the underlying standard upon which WiMax interoperability specifications will be based.

A fabless semiconductor company focused on OFDM modem chips, Wavesat was founded in 1993 and is a principal member of the WiMax Forum.
