Cadence Design Systems has made a strategic investment in communications IC specialist Inphi Corp., participating in the latest funding round that raised $18 million.

Existing investors Tallwood Venture Capital, Mayfield Fund, and Walden International also participated in the round.

The funding will be used to expand production to meet the increasing demand for Inphi's DDR2 logic devices as well as to launch Inphi's Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB) in early 2005. Inphi launched a series of logic devices earlier in 2004 and these designs are now moving to production at memory module manufacturers around the world.

"This level of investment is a testament to the technology and performance leadership Inphi has in high performance electronic components and precision timing devices for the computing and communications markets," commented Ashok Dhawan, president & CEO of Inphi Corp.

Brian Hamel, senior director of strategic ventures at Cadence Design Systems, added, "Having worked with the company as a partner for several years we are well aware of the enormous opportunity this investment presents."
