Atmel Corp. has licensed National Semiconductor Corp.'s Gigabit Ethernet physical layer (PHY) core for its integrated system-on-a-chip data storage and networking products. Atmel will embed the Gigabit Ethernet PHY core into its server connectivity products, network processors and transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) offload engines.

"Combining National's Gigabit Ethernet PHY core together with Atmel's HPLC (high performance low cost) architecture enables Atmel to offer next-generation server connectivity products to its customers that will reduce cost and speed up the development of a complete system," said Mehdi Bathaee, general manager and managing director of Atmel's network-storage business unit.

Mike Noonen, VP of National Semiconductor's communications and computing group, commented, "Our experience with Ethernet and analog building blocks will enable Atmel to produce a high-performance and highly integrated solution that will reduce power consumption and system costs for their customers."
