According to Japan-based research firm Techno Systems Research (TSR), the global shipments of CMOS image sensors are expected to outdo shipments of CCD modules in 2006, although the latter may exceed two million units by next year.

TSR projects a total of 205 million units for CCDs, but expects a larger amount of shipment of CMOS image sensors with 228 million units in 2006. The firm says that demand for mobile phones with cameras will increase, thereby driving up demand for image sensors. Much as shipment for CCDs will surpass the sensors with 186 million units to 184 million units by 2005, respectively, the latter will take over the following year.

This year, shipments for CMOS sensors are expected to achieve more than 27 percent year-on-year growth with 140 million units.
