Translators enable communication between incompatible IOs

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) introduced four new dual-supply voltage level translators that enable communication between incompatible IOs.

The AVC1T45, AVC2T45, AVC16T245 and AVC32T245 translators allow for bi-directional level translation between the 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V nodes. Any combination of these voltage levels can be used, making these devices flexible in mixed signal environments. Additionally, the low-voltage operation is suitable for today's mixed-mode applications as core processors move to lower operating voltages.

Level translators are essential when a lower level voltage output is trying to communicate with a higher voltage input (1.8V output and 3.3V input, for example), explained TI. By using a dual-supply level translator, not only is input compatibility achieved but also total system power is held in check. The opposite condition, where a higher voltage output is sending signals to a lower voltage input (3.3V output and 1.8V input, for example), using a dual-supply level-translator provides further IO compatibility and eliminates the need for high voltage tolerance at the input; thus assists the board designer for worry-free communication between ICs, said the company.

Designed to suit the translation requirements in portable handheld applications, the 1bit AVC1T45 and 2bit AVC2T45 help to simplify board routing by allowing a single or dual translator function to be placed on the board where needed rather than routing through a higher bit-width device. The AVC16T245 and AVC32T245 are improved versions of TI's current 16- and 32bit dual-supply translation functions. These devices provide lower power consumption (AVC16T245 = 25?A vs. AVCA164245 = 40?A). The bus hold option on the devices eliminates the need for external pullup/pulldown resistors. Full IBIS model support is also provided.

The SN74AVC1T45 and the SN74AVC2T45, as well as the bus hold versions, SN74AVCH1T45 and the SN74AVCH2T45, are available in the space saving NanoStar and NanoFree chip scale packaging. Estimated resale price for the 1T45 devices starts at 24 cents and estimated resale price of the 2T45 devices start at 35 cents.

The SN74AVC16T245, as well as the bus hold version SN74AVCH16T245, is available in the 56-ball VFBGA package. Estimated resale price for the SN74AVC16T245GQL/ZQL starts at $3.39. The SN74AVC32T245, as well as the bus hold version SN74AVCH32T245, is available in the 96-ball LFBGA package. Estimated resale for the SN74AVC32T245GKE/ZKE starts at $3.15.
