Bell Labs opens research center in Bangalore

Bell Labs, seeking to exploit the explosive growth of India's wireless networks, said Wednesday (Dec. 22) it is opening a research center here.

The research and development division of Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, N.J.) said the new lab will focus on developing software systems for wireline and wireless service providers deploying high-speed networks.

The new center will focus on developing computer algorithms, networking as well as network and data management. It will also conduct basic research in computing and communications software.

Specific projects will include developing operation support systems for voice-over-Internet Protocol networks and device drivers.

Rajiv Rastogi has been appointed director of the new center.
