Sipex Corp. released its SP8053, a photo detector IC specially designed for DVD and CD writers that utilize twin laser modules.

Integrating both high power DVD and CD laser diodes into a single module, twin laser modules enable lower system costs but require PDICs with a separate photo detector array for each wavelength to accommodate the physical offset between DVD and CD optical paths, explained the company.

The new SP8053 incorporates three gain modes for each array to support high-speed writing for a variety of DVD and CD media. According to Sipex, the combination of dual array support with multiple gain modes enables lower system costs without sacrificing the advantages of multiple gain modes. The SP8053 features 20 photo detector elements, 130MHz RF and fast channel bandwidth and 10ns settling times.

Other features include a 200V/?s (min) slew rate, sleep mode, 1ns group delay, and differential outputs with 3.6V differential output swing. Priced at $1.35 in 100,000-piece orders, the SP8053 is housed in a 16-pin clear OPLGA packaging that measures 5-by-4mm. An evaluation board is also available to assist in the evaluation of the SP8053.
