STMicroelectronics (ST) announced that they have developed the world's fastest 64Mb serial-interface flash memory with an enhanced data transfer clock speed of 50MHz and read throughput of 50Mbps.

According to the press release, the four-line serial SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) interface of the new M25P64 greatly simplifies system design, reduces pin-count, and offers reduced power consumption via a deep power-down mode that draws only 1?A of current.

Designed for code storage in a wide range of applications, the 64Mb serial Flash memory is offered in a MLP8 package that measures 6-by-8mm, as well as in a S016 package. It uses the company's ECOPACK Pb-free technology for RoHS-compliance, and are specified for the -40C to 85C temperature range.

Built using a high-quality CMOS process, the device offers a minimum data retention of 20 years and guarantees 100,000 erase/program cycles per sector, including both bulk erase and sector erase instructions. The JEDEC standard 16bit electronic signature allows easy device identification, added ST.

Samples are already available, with volume production planned for the first quarter of 2005. Pricing is $6.2 in volume quantities.
