Netgear Inc., a provider of branded networking products, announced the expansion of its line of ProSafe business-class Gigabit switches with the launch of the ProSafe 16 Port Gigabit Smart Switch (GS716T) and ProSafe 12 Port Gigabit Layer 2 Managed Switch (GSM7212).

Targeted at meeting the demands of growing small- and medium-sized businesses, these new switches enable users to future-proof their networks by providing managed high-speed Gigabit switching at budget-friendly pricing, said the company.

The new GS716T is designed for use in businesses that want the benefits of management, but do not need the cost and complexity of an advanced managed network. Featuring 16 10/100/1,000Mbps ports and two Small Form-Factor (SFP) Gigabit ports, this product provides key management features such as performance monitoring, port configuration, VLAN for traffic control, port trunking for increased bandwidth, and Class of Service (CoS) for traffic prioritization.

Standards-based, the GS716T also works with the company's Network Management Software NMS100 via the SNMP v1 protocol and is compatible with Windows, Unix, Mac and Linux OSes.

Meanwhile, the GSM7212 features 12 10/100/1,000Mbps ports and 12 SFP Gigabit ports to support bandwidth-intensive applications such as video, voice and database transactions. It provides full Layer 2 management functionality, including extensive VLAN support, resiliency, traffic prioritization, port trunking, port mirroring, RADIUS, DHCP features and broadcast storm protection. Kevin Allan, Director of Product Marketing for Netgear's Business Solutions, commented, "For companies that need full Layer 2 Gigabit switching, the GSM7212 is an affordable, high performance solution that brings fiber flexibility to the edge of the network to improve workgroup connections or to the core to upgrade to a Gigabit Ethernet backbone."

The GSM7212 provides affordable wire-speed Gigabit performance and full Layer 2 management functionality. The non-blocking design offers full Gigabit throughput simultaneously to all 12 10/100/1,000Mbps ports, with Auto Uplink on every port, to ensure reliable performance. Twelve combination SFP Gigabit interfaces provide flexibility and the convenience of deployment in environments that require fiber connectivity.

Both switches are backed by a five-year warranty, 24/7 technical support, with optional premium support switch packs. The GSM7212 and GS716T are available for $950 and $560, respectively.
