Software lets signal integrity analyzers meet PCI Express 1.1 specs

Test-and-measurement equipment maker Wavecrest, a developer of signal integrity analysis products, announced that its SIA family of signal integrity analyzers meet the new PCI Express 1.1 Specification defined by the PCI-SIG. Wavecrest co-chaired the PCI-SIG's Jitter Working Group, where it made major contributions to the new spec.

Wavecrest's signal integrity products for PCI Express consists of the company's enhanced SIA 3300D or SIA 3600D analyzer and its GigaView software. The system includes a dedicated PCI Express software tool that tests all PHY (physical layer) jitter parameters with immediate Pass/Fail confirmation on one screen.

For its part, a SIA-3600D provides both timing and amplitude compliance measurements in any environment, system or chip, electrical or optical. Clock signals up to 6GHz, and aata up to 4.5Gbps can be analyzed. The SIA-3300D provides both timing and amplitude compliance measurements, with clock signals up to 2.5GHz and aata up to 2.5Gbps.

Amplitude parameters such as rise time, fall time, and eye opening can also be tested. The GigaView software provides additional diagnostic tools that enable you to determine the root cause of signal integrity problems.

Patented algorithm

GigaView software uses Wavecrest's patented TailFit algorithm, a methodology for separating and identifying various jitter components and providing a total jitter number. This capability lets you predict the future performance of a device or system to a BER (bit error rate) of 10-12 or lower (a requirement of the v1.1 spec).

Wavecrest's SIAs also include built-in programmable clock recovery that provides a first-order high-pass function for testing jitter. The PCI Express 1.1 Specification updated the requirement from predecessor 1.0a from third-order high-pass function to first-order. That was done to ensure more accuracy during jitter testing.

"The 2.5Gbps speeds of PCI Express applications require critical testing methodologies, so that overall device performance is ensured," notes Wavecrest President and CEO Dennis Leisz. "Moreover, the new PCI Express 1.1 Specification was written, in part, to ensure more accuracy in jitter testing of high volume applications."

Leisz says Wavecrest is now taking orders for its SIA Signal Integrity Analysis products that meet the PCI Express 1.1 Specification. Shipment is expected in January.
