Tiny thermistor offers enhanced response time

AVX Corp. has developed a 0402 surface-mount thermistor for temperature compensation and control applications in handheld and portable electronics equipment such as mobile phones, hard disk drives, laptop computers and compact disc players.

The NB23 series of NTC (negative temperature coefficient) thermistors feature resistance values from 10 k? to 100 k?, with standard tolerances of 5, 10 and 20 percent. Maximum dissipation is 150mW with a thermal dissipation factor of 0.8mW/°C. The operating temperature range is -55°C to 150°C. The thermistors also feature a nickel barrier termination that provides excellent solderability characteristics for lead free (high temperature) soldering processes, said the company.

Ron Demcko, AVX's applications engineering manager said, "its small size allows for greater design flexibility, such as placement in a battery pack as a temperature sensor, while providing the same high-level of accuracy and a better response time than larger NTC thermistor devices." The thermistors are also suitable for temperature measurement on LCD displays, especially those used on high resolution color displays.

Typical pricing starts at 11 cents in quantities of 10,000. Delivery is from stock to eight weeks.
