Wasabi Systems Inc. announced that it will provide Wasabi Certified NetBSD support for AMCC's PowerPC 440SPe processor.

Based on the PowerPC superscalar processing platform, the PowerPC 440SPe features higher bandwidth, PCI Express-based connectivity and the design flexibility necessary to meet the requirements of embedded storage and networking applications. According to Wasabi, its Certified NetBSD support for this processor offers significant benefits for storage area networking (SAN) and embedded projects that utilize PCI-Express and require sustained gigabit-level I/O.

"Wasabi Certified NetBSD is designed to bring together the world's most powerful and portable open source OS with the security of corporate certification and support," said Frank G. Logan, III, President and CEO of Wasabi Systems. "We are excited about our relationship with AMCC and look forward to bringing this technology to more PowerPC processors."

The company added that the Wasabi Certified NetBSD is the only commercially available, GPL-free Unix-like OS with professional certification and support. In addition to providing full commercial support, it is licensed to OEMs on a per-seat basis and is free of legal requirements associated with the GPL.
