New PC features calls for power consumption

Bencuya: As desktop PCs continue to adapt new features and capabilities, the more these devices consume very high power.

Two key technology trends will emerge in the next several years. First, cheaper consumer products will be cooperating with more and more wireless communications functions. Second, computers will have more consumer electronics functions.

Fairchild Semiconductor grows intently by focusing on the development of new products and technologies targeted at the power components and power management designs across all segments, including desktop and notebook PCs. As desktop PCs continue to adapt new features and capabilities, power consumption will remain a major concern.

In Asia, Fairchild's growth relies mainly in the computer, communications and consumer industries. Today, computing and communications are regarded as the biggest drivers for industry growth, both in shipments and revenues. Despite weaker sales recently in these segments, Fairchild still believes that the power content for each notebook PC will increase each year.

Fairchild provides technically innovative solutions for power and power management applications by offering our customers greater value through integration of capabilities across analog and discrete power. We also provide innovative packaging solutions to meet designers' needs. For example, in automotive applications, Fairchild's Smart Power Switch uses PowerTrench technology to integrate sense transistors, diodes and resistors with PowerTrench MOSFETs, EcoSpark IGBTs and dense/high performance IC technologies. These devices provide control and protection functions, and integrate elements with Fairchild's innovative packaging approaches.

Another example is Fairchild's Green Power Switch (FPSTM) family of solutions that support a full range of consumer and computing applications. The Green FPS products are highly integrated offline power switches that incorporate a fully avalanche-rated SenseFET and current mode PWM IC in a single package to significantly reduce system standby power, EMI emissions, total component count and board space.

In 2005, Fairchild projects a single-digit growth. While sales growth is not as strong as it was in 2004, we interpret it as an inventory correction cycle, typical in the semiconductor industry and far from the downturn in 2000 and 2001.
