ERNI is expanding its offering of mount D-subminiature connectors by adding vertical D-subs for surface mount applications.

The new vertical connectors complement the existing right angle male and female surface mount, press-fit and through hole reflow (THR) D-subs. According to the company, these new devices help its customers reduce PCB assembly costs by enabling them to simultaneously process vertical D-subs in the same surface mount production line used for other components. This eliminates or reduces additional processing steps, added ERNI.

For fully automatic pick-and-place, the new connectors are delivered with tray or tape-on-reel packaging that is suited for automated processing. A large, integrated suction hood enables easy and reliable pick-up with the vacuum pipette during mounting. In addition, the insulator body is made of high-temperature-resistant LCP thermoplastic, and is designed for soldering with all commonly used surface mount soldering processes. Together with the tin-plated terminals, the black insulator body and black suction hood offer strong contrast for reliable optical recognition.

For increased reliability, a metal mounting bracket with a large surface relieves the strains arising from plug-in, removal, and cable handling. Furthermore, the integrated interlock hardware accessories ensure reliable fastening of the cable housings on the connector.

The new generation of D-sub connectors are available with overall heights of 6.3mm or 9mm in compliance with DIN 41652 and CECC 75301-802 specifications. They are available with 9, 15, 25 or 37 positions. The contacts are gold-plated in the mating area and tin-plated in the termination area.

The vertical SMD 9 position female D-subs with bolts and jackscrews installed are priced at $1.50 each in volume.
