Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co. Ltd (AKM) unveiled its 24bit 2-channel A/D, D/A converter that promises to provide exceptional performance.

The new AK4620A device achieves sample rates up to 216KHz, making it suitable for the professional and consumer market. The ADC side supports both single-ended input with IPGA and low distortion differential input, and these modes are switchable by pin or register control. According to AKM, the single-ended input mode improves the ADC's dynamic range by 10dB when compared with the AK4524, while the differential input mode achieves a 5dB improvement in dynamic range when compared with the AK4528.

The AK4620A supports the playback feature for direct stream digital (DSD) data, allowing switching on the DAC side between PCM and DSD data. The DAC side boasts further improvements in AKM's advanced multi-bit architecture and achieves a virtually flat noise floor up to 80kHz for PCM data.

With an operating voltage between 4.75V and 5.25V (for analog supply) and 3V to 3.6V (for digital supply), the new audio CODEC also features linear phase decimation and interpolation digital filter; A/D dynamic range of 110dB at single-ended mode and 113dB at differential mode; D/A dynamic range of 115dB; and switched capacitor technologies with anti-jitter characteristics.

The AK4620A is housed in a 30-pin VSOP package. Evaluation boards (AKD4620A) are also available.
