Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) introduced a high-performance, filter-free stereo Class-D audio power amplifier that promises to enable designers of cellphones to develop audio-rich products, while maximizing talk time and audio quality.

With about two-thirds lower quiescent current and 80 percent lower noise floor than its nearest competitor, the TPA2012D2 packs high efficiency and audio quality in a tiny package, enabling the features and form factors consumers demand, said TI.

"As consumer desire for audio-rich features like polyphonic ring-tones, MP3 music, streaming video with audio and 3-D surround-sound effects drives demand for stereo cellphones, manufacturers require two-channel, high-efficiency Class-D amplifiers to satisfy the demand without draining the battery," said Art George, VP of TI's high-performance linear business. "With understanding of market trends and state-of-the-art Class-D audio power amplifier and packaging technology, TI is able to provide a tiny solution tailor-made for these applications."

Additionally, the new amplifier complements TI's OMAP processors and digital signal processor-based solutions for portable audio players, offering manufacturers a suite of application-optimized products.

The 2.1W stereo Class-D device is currently available in a 4-by-4mm ThinQFN (quad flat no-lead) package and is sampling in the company's Pb-free 2-by-2mm Wafer Chip Scale Package (WCSP). Operating from a 3.3V supply, the TPA2012D2 draws 6mA of supply current and has an A-weighted noise floor of 27?VRMS. In addition, the device needs only two external components for correct operation and was designed for maximum system flexibility, offering four gain select options and independent channel shutdown.

Suggested resale price in quantities of 1,000 is 95 cents. The device in a Pb-free WCSP is sampling now and is expected to be available in volume by March for $1.05, also in 1,000-unit quantities. An evaluation module (EVM) will be available in 1Q 05.
