Samsung Electronics announced Wednesday (Jan. 12) it has completed development of a digital TV receiver chip for terrestrial (VSB) and cable (QAM) digital TV broadcasting.

According to Samsung, the chip, designated the S5H1406, enables digital TV receivers to acquire and track signals in harsh environments such as multi-path channel conditions, dynamic conditions with multiple signal variations and where reception is weak.

The chip is designed to work with a System-on-Chip (SoC) device, the S5H2200, developed by Samsung last July, to give customers a total digital TV solution. The S5H2200 integrates a dual MPEG-2 decoder, CPU, and the company's image improvement function known as the DNIe, or Digital Natural Image engine.

By implementing the company's proprietary algorithms, the S5H1406 offers quick access to signals that reduce transmission interference. The chip also offers an advanced demodulator and synchronization detector, high performance equalizer and forward error correction (FEC).

Samsung's S5H1406 chip will be available in Asia the first quarter of 2005.
