Nanya to add 12-in chip plant

Taiwan-based chipmaker Nanya Technology Corp. mulls over adding another 12-in DRAM fab as part of its goal to grab 10 percent share of the global chip supply this year. No schedule has yet been made by Nanya although the plant may be located in Linkou, Taipei.

Accounting for about 4.5 percent of the world's chip supply, Nanya currently produces 12-in wafers via Inotera Memories Inc. The company is also cooperating with Infineon Technologies AG in R&D of 70nm and 90nm DRAM trench technologies.

What is a wafer?
The base unit of chipmaking. A thin circular slice of a semiconducting material, such as pure silicon, on which an IC can be formed.

What is DRAM?
Dynamic random access memory (DRAM) is a type of random access memory that stores each bit of data in a separate capacitor within an IC. Since real capacitors leak charge, the information eventually fades unless the capacitor charge is refreshed periodically. Because of this refresh requirement, it is a dynamic memory as opposed to SRAM and other static memory. And unlike non-volatile firmware chips, both DRAM and SRAM lose their content when the power is turned off.
