Sales of cellular handsets rose 29 percent from 520 million in 2003 to 670 million last year and are projected to reach 1.1 billion by 2008, according to market research firm IC Insights Inc.

IC Insights said a strong global economy and new camera phone models accounted for last year's surge in handset sales. In addition, the addition of Internet browsing, color screens, voice dialing and games are driving mobile phone sales as well as sales of ICs used in those products.

The firm estimates the average time-to-replacement for a mobile phone will shrink from 4.5 years in 2001 to 2.5 years by 2008, with the percentage of replacement phone sales growing from 63 percent in 2004 to 81 percent by 2008.
