The Open Modular Architecture Controls Users' Group and Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society said Friday (Jan. 19) they would merge, with the OMAC group becoming a subsidiary of ISA.

OMAC's Users' Group was formed to provide companies with an organization through which companies could work to establish a repository of open architecture requirements and operating experience from users, software developers, hardware builders, and OEMs. The group also focuses on unifying industry and government developed Application Program Interfaces (APIs) as well as pursue a common international API standard with European and Japanese user groups.

ISA is non-profit organization fostering advancement in automation-related technology, hosting conferences and exhibitions as well as publishing books, magazines, and standards. The group also provides certification for industry professionals.

The organizations believe OMAC's work with representatives from discrete manufacturing companies complements ISA's traditional strengths in the process and batch sectors. In addition, OMAC's focus on satisfying the technical needs of end-users enhances ISA's mission to serve the information needs of automation professionals.

The merger is slated to be completed the first half of 2005.
