Board maker Matrox Graphics has a new graphics card that supports very high-resolution dual-link monitors under Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Display drivers for linux and Sun Solaris x86 oses are also available as upgrades.

Dubbed the Parhelia DL256, it's a 64bit 66MHz PCI graphics card that's compatible with all PCI bus and PCI-X bus slots. Combined with a 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display, the card provides output at resolutions up to 2,560 x 1,600 pixels.

Supports dual-link

The Parhelia DL256 also supports the dual-link DVI industry standard for compatibility with next-generation high-resolution digital monitors. Using dual-link at a standard 60Hz refresh rate, the board can support resolutions up to four million pixels, and dual-link provides twice the resolution of standard single-link DVI approaches.

The dual-link DVI standard is also backwards compatible with single-link DVI, so the card can be used with existing monitors as well as with next-generation digital monitors. Unlike some high-resolution monitors, dual-link monitors connect to the graphics card with a single cable.

"In CAD, GIS, dispatch, security monitoring, and process control, it's critical to have large amounts of information presented as clearly as possible," notes Sam Recine, manager of workstation graphics at Matrox Graphics.

Recine explains that increasing display resolution offers some of the same advantages as increasing the number of displays. "Extra displays are appropriate when information is easily dividedfor example, when viewing different windowsbut increasing the resolution of a display is more appropriate when large amounts of information need to be kept together, for example, when map viewing."

More features

The card also packs 256MB of graphics memory, simultaneous support for a second (analog) monitor for resolution up to 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, and multi-card 2D/3D OpenGL and Microsoft DirectX acceleration. By using more than one Parhelia DL256 graphics card in the same computer, you can use more than one high-resolution digital monitor at a time.

It also supports hardware quad-buffered stereo 3D, and TV output (dishing up composite video, and S video, in either NTSC or PAL formats).

The Matrox Parhelia DL256 PCI graphics card is available for about $700.
