TTPCom and ARM have started collaborating on 3G intellectual property platforms, the first fruits of which will see TTP Com integrating an ARM 11 processor core with the its Cellular Baseband Engine (CBEmacro) technology.

CBEmacro 3G, a multimode cellular baseband engine, is designed to build sub-systems for GSM, GPRS, EDGE, W-CDMA and HSDPA. It is based on the ARM1156T2-S and comes pre-verified to enable licensees to design products as quickly as possible.

As part of the deal TTPCom will distribute the combination chip designers and ARM will be responsible for licensing the processor core to its silicon partners.

Licensees of CBEmacro 3G will be able to re-use their existing investment in ARM tools and design flows, and integrate with their in-house IP to make complete cellular SoC products.

Tony Milbourn, Managing Director of TTP, commented: "The complexity associated with implementing global cellular wireless standards has now been eased. CBEmacro 3G enables silicon partners and their OEM/ODM customers to reduce integration costs and bring products to market more quickly. This collaboration will instigate change within our industry."

The collaboration comes on the same day (Jan. 31) as TTPCom released a trading update for the six months to March 31 2005 for both the main group and its ip.access subsidiary.

The company warns that tough market conditions and pricing pressures in China would impact licensing activity and that this will impact sales and profits for the period harder than anticipated in the last update in October 2004.

"Unit shipments from some of our Chinese licensees have been lower than expected as market shares taken up by the domestic manufacturers have continued to reduce and certain of our newer licensees have delayed the launch of products", the company said.

It now expects sales for the year ended March 31 at TTPCom to be around #58 million ($109 million) and operating profits to be between #4.4m ($8.5 million) and #5.4m ($10.2 million). Compared with last year, the company anticipates revenues to be approximately 23 percent higher.

The longer term outlook is still 'very positive', the company says.

"As a result of the progress made during the latter part of the year by our larger licensees, and by LG in particular, we now expect that the total number of handsets sold in 2004, powered by our technology, will be 40m+, up from the 20m+ last year and the 30m+ that we expected at the start of the year."
