Greater flexibility, easier installation and reduced attenuation are said to be among the key advantages offered by Molex Inc.'s new MPO optical round ribbon cable assemblies. The company achieved these benefits by developing termination techniques that maintain the round cable's unique routing features and secure the cable to the MPO connectors. Plus, the ribbons are enclosed in a solid buffer core that reduces fiber pistoning between ribbons that can cause attenuation in longer cable assemblies.

Compared to difficult-to-route traditional flab ribbon cables with stacked, 12-fiber ribbons that are prone to fiber pistoning, the new MPO round jacketed ribbon cable assemblies feature multiple ribbons stacked inside a round jacket to provide a more stable, low-profile solution for complex, dense optical network applications. The new cables can be used in parallel-optic transceiver interconnection applications, patch panels, optical switches and routers and datacommunication centers.

The new cable assemblies are available in fiber counts up to 24 fibers, with higher counts up to 72 fibers to be made available shortly. Cable assembly pricing starts at approximately $150, and varies by construction type and length. Delivery is four to six weeks.
