India's HCL to work with Agere Systems

India's HCL Technologies Ltd will work with Agere Systems Inc. to promote Agere's network processors, the companies said.

Agere will launch a new software package and a service agreement with HCL to enable telecom equipment makers to deliver products a year or two faster and save millions of dollars in product development costs.

Agere also will unveil the first in a series of new software packages running on its network processors and aimed at multiservice networking applications. Equipment manufacturers can use Agere's new functional programming interface (FPI) to avoid spending time and money on developing thousands of lines of software code. The new FPI has a suite of protocols and services for target applications.

The agreement also for HCL teams to work with Agere engineers on the FPI software and provide customization and system integration services to Agere's customers. The agreement allows equipment manufacturers to focus on product features. HCL has created a development team to work with Agere on developing and validating FPI software for its network processors.

Agere and HCL software and services will be sold as value-added packages with Agere's network processors. The first package is for customers using the APP550. The packages alos will be sold with future versions of the Agere network processors.
