Cadence Design Systems Inc. said Friday (Feb. 4) a Chinese partner has begun sampling a dual-mode RF transceiver designed using Cadence design platforms.

Rising Microelectronics Co. Ltd (Guangzhou, China) is sampling what it claims is the first SCDMA/GSM RF IC transceiver. The chip was designed using the Cadence Virtuoso custom design and Encounter digital IC design platforms. It was implemented using IBM Corp.'s 0.18?m BiCMOS process and process design kit. The kit was developed and qualified by IBM for Virtuoso technologies.

Cadence said Rising is targeting its SCDMA/GSM transceiver at China's growing SCDMA wireless phone market. SCDMA is considered the likely Chinese standard for 3G wireless applications.

Rising claims its SCDMA transceiver is the first designed by a Chinese company, and the only one that can be used for both SCDMA and GSM dual-mode handsets.
