Piezo ceramic motor delivers 2N force in small 4mm assembly

New Scale Technologies Inc. has released its newest Squiggle motor that is 50 percent smaller than its initial offering. The new SQ-306 motor, which is said to be the smallest piezo motor available in the market, measures 4(?)-by-20(L)mm.

The motor delivers a 250nm position resolution and 6mm travel. The speed can be precisely controlled from microns per second to more than 10mm per second. They are suitable for implantable medical devices (MRI compatible), microfluidic pumps, night vision systems, auto focus mechanics for mobile phone cameras and nanotechnology tools. These Squiggle motors generate no magnetic fields and can be made entirely from non-ferrous materials, making them MRI-compatible and safe for medical devices.

The SQ-306 is also available in a metal housing to drive miniature linear positioning stages. The housed motor directly replaces manual micrometers to motorize fine-positioning stages and mounts in optical or mechanical systems.

The SQ-306 is priced at $1,250 for single units. They are available from stock.
