Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) unveiled its SGI Infinite Storage TP9700 RAID storage array last week (Feb. 8), claiming it is the industry's first Fiber Channel storage array equipped with a 4Gbps interface. The company said the array doubles the speed of its previous offerings. SGI noted that the TP9700 operates on Engenio Information Technologies' XBB high-density storage architecture. SGI added that the TP9700 utilizes an eight 4Gb/s Fibre Channel configuration.

"This gives customers flexibility in how they chose to use the 1,600MBps of sustained bandwidth the system delivers," SGI stated. "These performance improvements will be integrated into the SGI Infinite Storage Area Network, Network Attached Storage and Data Lifecycle Management platforms."

The company pointed out that the increased performance enables users to eliminate much site infrastructure¡ªincluding adapters, cabling and switch ports¡ªto utilize their storage.
