The optoelectronic industry in Taiwan is expected to experience a slump this year after stronger performance last year. According to the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center (IEK), the performance of the flat-panel display sector is not driving demand as expected.

Huang Shin-yi, an analyst from IEK, said, "Slower growth for the flat-panel sector is the key factor weighing down the annual growth. The sector accounts for the biggest share of the nation's optoelectronics industry."

Last year, Taiwan's optoelectronics industry gained a record high NT$1.1 trillion ($34.6 billion at NT$31.76:$1) sales. This year's sales is expected to grow by 36 percent to NT$1.5 trillion ($47.2 billion), lower than last year's annual growth rate of 42 percent.

Jim Chung, another analyst from IEK, added, "Cautious capacity expansion and intense competition from South Korean rivals will be the primary reasons for the slower growth."
