Shipments of plasma displays rose 37 percent quarter-to-quarter and 98 percent year-over-year to 1.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2004, according to market research firm DisplaySearch.

DisplaySearch said plasma display shipments exceeded original projections by 3 percent, which the firm attributed to strong seasonal demand and lower panel pricing.

Blended plasma display module average selling prices fell at a double-digit rate in the fourth quarter for the third consecutive quarter, resulting in a 23 percent quarter-to-quarter and 31 percent year-over-year increase in revenue to a record $1.2 billion, said DisplaySearch.

For 2004, plasma display module shipments to the TV and public display markets rose 107 percent to 3.6 million panels, with revenue rising 51 percent to $4.3 billion and with blended average selling prices down 27 percent. In particular, sales of 42 in. panels were strong as demand outside Japan increased, according to DisplaySearch.

Samsung SDI, LG Electronics, Matsushita, Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma (FHP), and Pioneer were the top five plasma display suppliers in unit volume.

Those rankings could change in 2005, with FHP recently announcing it would transfer its plasma display operations to Hitachi and Hitachi announcing it would collaborate on plasma display research and development, marketing, and IP sharing with Matsushita.
