Renesas Technology Corp. announced that its quad-band EDGE RF system solution is being used by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd in its new EDGE mobile handset. According to Samsung, it has selected the RF system because it simplifies the implementation of the radio. The new EDGE handset is already in volume production.

The EDGE RF system from Renesas is comprised of three major components, the RFIC, power amplifier and SAW front-end module. The company claims the RF system works with many different basebands.

Yasuhiro Nunogawa, mobile application engineering department manager, system solution business group of Renesas, said, "A single RF shield is all that is necessary to protect the solution which shows very stable performance over a wide range of conditions including extreme mismatch at the antenna. In addition to improving performance in the field this also means that the system is easy to design and is highly stable in manufacture."
