Semtech International AG announced last week the release of its new protection device that can work with both upstream and downstream USB 2.0 (full speed) and on-the-go (OTG) ports in portable electronics and peripherals.

The latest member of Semtech's EMIClamp family of protection devices, the EClamp3343C protects USB ports from electrostatic discharge (ESD) and also filters electromagnetic interference (EMI). It is said to be the only USB protection device on the market with terminating 1.5 k? pull-up and 15 k? pull-down resistors that allow it to identify the type of port it is supporting. In addition, Semtech said, the configurable nature of the product reduces the need to qualify and inventory multiple devices, speeding time to market and lowering costs.

"The USB interface is proliferating and spreading to more innovative consumer devices, increasing the likelihood of damaging electrical charges and emphasizing the need for reliable protection," said Tom Dugan, Director of Protection Products. "This device [EClamp3343C] rises to these challenges with an ultrasmall footprint and flexible USB support that is sure to meet the needs of the design engineer, the procurement staff and eventually the end-user."

The EClamp3343C integrates a 33? series termination resistor for impedance matching and allows for a separate connection from the 3.3V supply to the pullup resistor for full compliance to the USB specification. ESD protection is provided by TVS diodes on D+, D-, Vbus and the ID pin for OTG designs. ESD surges in excess of 8kV contact and 15kV air discharge are suppressed as mandated by the IEC 61000-4-2, Level.

Housed in a 1.96-by-1.33-by-0.65mm, 11-bump flip chip package, the EClamp3343C comes standard with the company's exclusive non-conductive back coating technology that offers increased mechanical durability, improves marking and is compliant with UL 94V-0 flammability requirements.

The EClamp3343C is available in production quantities and is priced at 40 cents each in 10,000-piece orders. Ordering code is EClamp3343C.WC for lead solder bumps, and EClamp3343C.WCT for Pb-free solder bumps.
