TI DAC reduces radio frequency design requirements

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) disclosed that they have developed its new dual-channel 500MSPS digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to answer the growing demands of wireless carriers for low-noise floor and increased performance devices. "With the DAC5687, TI is pleased to expand it's offerings with a new device that meets these critical needs while enabling manufacturers to more easily adapt to new and emerging standards," said Mike Walker, manager of TI's high speed DAC group.

Featuring a greater level of built-in signal processing, the DAC5687 not only decreases noise, but also reduces radio frequency design requirements and base station costs, said TI. The device offers optimized gain, phase and offset control features for direct up-conversion architectures using IQ modulators in 3G base stations. This 500MS/s device also supports today's 3G clock rates, including 491.52MHz.

The DAC5687 delivers a signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) greater than 75dBFS and 3rd order intermodulation (IMD3) greater than 81dBc while allowing multi-carrier systems to operate with higher output power. Additionally, the company said, the DAC5687 improves system reliability and enables higher base station channel density while dissipating only 700mW at 500MS/s.

For developers using the DAC5687, TI provides the DAC5687EVM evaluation module for easy integration of the device into wireless infrastructure base stations and other target applications. Sample units of the DAC5687 are already available, with production units scheduled in April at a cost of $22.50 per 1,000 units.
