Emcore Corp., a provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for broadband, fiber optics, satellite and wireless communications, now has a small form-factor version of its existing 10GBASE-LX4 (LX4) module used in 10GbE (10Gb Ethernet) applications. The reduced-size X2 module is small enough to top-side mount on your host circuit board

Supporting the 10GbE IEEE-802.3ae-2002 standard, the devices are priced at about $1,500 a pop, according to Bryan R. Gregory, the company's VP of marketing.

Multi-mode and single-mode waveguides

The small form-factor LX4 module in an X2 form-factor offers all of the functions of Emcore's XENPAK units. These modules, with a single interface, can transmit over both multi-mode fiber and single-mode fiber waveguides. Emcore's LX4, CX4 and EX4 modules now support 10GbE over the range of workgroup, enterprise, campus and MAN (metropolitan area networks).

Pluggable X2 and XENPAK form-factors enable a pay-as-you-populate cost structure during installation. Modular interconnects, such as X2 and XENPAK, are inserted into pluggable port slots in switches, routers, servers and storage systems.

According to the company, these newest modules are the only such products approved by the IEEE that can enable 10GbE connectivity over 300m, as well as over multi-mode fiber, and to 10km of single-mode fiber.

"These new modules will enhance system vendor options for interfacing with the large installed base of LX4 ports that have already been deployed by end users," notes Dr. Robert Bryan, VP and GM of Emcore's Fiber Optics Division. Bryan contends that Emcore is the leading supplier in the LX4 segment, with over 10,000 XENPAK units shipped last year.
