Dutch electronics company Philips said Wednesday (Feb. 23) it is looking to tweak some of its reference designs for the global market into custom products for the Indian marketplace.

Philips is also growing the strength of its division here that develops consumer businesses solutions in audio/video and television systems, increasing staff from 300 to 500 and strengthening its center of software competence for the Nexperia home platform.

"We need to cater to the Indian market as it develops and spending power increases," said Leon P.J. Husson, executive vice president, consumer businesses, Philips Semiconductors. "Next month, we will examine how to build systems for this market from a semiconductor point of view, fine-tuning reference designs from an Indian market viewpoint."

Philips Semiconductors is also leveraging Indian software companies by getting some of these firms to build connectivity, audio/video codecs, middleware and application software and software stacks.
