In what appears to be a move to outspend its rivals, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd on Friday (Feb. 25) said that it will invest a total of 2.08 trillion ($2.1 billion) in its second flat-panel display production line in Tanjeong, Korea.

Like its seventh-generation (7-1) TFT line, the new 7-2 line will be fitted for substrates of 1870mm-by-2200mm and is planned to begin operations in the first half of 2006.

It will be dedicated to the production of 32-, 40-, and 46-inch panels. Production capacity is set for 45,000 substrates per month and the company may decide to further increase its investment depending upon the conditions of the LCD TV market.

In December, Samsung (Seoul) originally said that it would begin construction of the plant. It made a 290 billion won ($273 million) investment in order to start off the construction of the building for the new line.

The construction of Line 7-2 is in response to the rapid growth in demand for 30-inch and larger LCD TVs.
