Via Technologies Inc., a vendor of computer processors and peripheral logic chipsets, has announced the K8N800A chipset which it said is optimized for the Turion 64bit processor from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) as well as the same company's Athlon 64bit and Sempron processors.

Via did not say how many chips make up the chip set but said it does include the S3 Graphics UniChrome Pro graphics processor plus the Chromotion CE video display engine which performs hardware-based MPEG-2 decoding. The K8N800A is based upon the K8N800 chipset with added support for the AMD Turion, the company said.

AMD launched Turion at the Consumer Electronics Show, Las Vegas, early this year as a reply to the successful Centrino range from the world's largest chip maker, Intel Corp. However, AMD did not provide any details of Turion except to say the Turion line is a 64bit processor aimed at "thin and light" notebooks and at competing with Intel's Centrino.

Subsequently analysts and system builders have questioned the wisdom of AMD's move arguing that the notebook and home computer sector doesn't require 64-bit processing.
