Philips Semiconductors applies RFID to its own supply chain

Showing faith in its own products, and providing a working example to inspire potential customers, Philips Semiconductors has deployed radio frequency identification (RFID) tags in its supply chain in Asia, the company said Wednesday (Mar. 2).

The company did not say how much the project had cost.

The deployment was done in collaboration with IBM Corp., which supplied RFID WebSphere middleware and integration services, and used Philips' RFID chips.

Philips Asian RFID project covers the tagging and tracing of wafer cases and carton packages for flows of goods between its manufacturing facility in Kaoshiung, Taiwan, and its Asia-Pacific distribution center in Hong Kong.

"Manufacturers and distributors worldwide are looking for proven business cases for RFID. Our decision to use RFID is based on evidence that the technology generates a positive business case for our supply chain," said Mathieu Clerkx, chief information officer and senior vice president responsible for supply chain management at Philips Semiconductors, in a statement.

Philips said it is considering implementing the RFID solution throughout its semiconductor division across its five semiconductor manufacturing facilities and three distribution centers in Asia Pacific, Europe and the U.S. The company also plans to support customer integration of RFID in their supply chain management processes.

The tags are being supplied by Smartag and Tagsys, RFID tag readers have come from Tagsys, and a company called Zebra is supplying printers for the project Philips said.
